Students Help Welcome Mushers Marquette, Michigan February 17, 2009 – Students from Great Lakes Recovery Centers helped welcome participants of this year’s U.P. 200 and Midnight Run by stuffing gift bags for the racers. Race participants will receive the gift bags that have been decorated by students from the Gwinn Schools and filled with donated items from area businesses. For the last few year’s the students from Great Lakes Recovery Centers have been assisting the U.P. Sled Dog Association by stuffing gift bags and helping with the vet check that takes place the day of the race. Patty Holman, Board member of the U.P. Sled Dog Association said, “the kids from Great Lakes are a great help every year.” Students assist sled dog handlers during the vet check while race vets check the canine athletes that will participate in the races. “The students enjoy their time away from the program with the dogs,” said Teresa Piziali, Supervisor at Great Lakes Recovery Centers Youth Services. Piziali went on to say, “it’s a great way to show our kids that it feels good to give back.” Many of the students at the Youth Program have had a very turbulent existence and this experience serves as a valuable lesson as to what life can be like. Substance Abuse Clients Experience Metamorphosis First Hand For several years, the clients at Great Lakes Recovery Centers Youth Services have been rearing Monarch butterfly eggs and larvae. Watching the metamorphosis from egg to butterfly offers a rewarding and beautiful experience. The process lends itself to many metaphors for recovery. More information can be found here. Youth Bridges Releasing Celebration Roughly twenty seniors and youth clientele participated in the event that involved two weeks of preparation. In the sessions preceding the celebration the two groups worked together to make carefully crafted miniature baskets. The baskets symbolically would hold any pent up emotion that had held them down. Day . Smiles and laughter were present wherever you looked at the First United Methodist Church of Marquette. The kids from GLRC’s Youth Services hosted games that the two groups had spent weeks preparing together as part of the GLRC Bridges Program. Activities included a ring toss, bingo, a number wheel, bean bag toss, and blinko, among others, all in an effort to find a common thread of humanity. More information can be found here. ECONO FOODS – WE SHARE PROGRAM We are pleased to announce that GLRC will partner with Econo Foods in participating in the We Share Program. This program allows each Econo Foods store to donate 1% of all Econo Foods receipts collected by GLRC to be donated to the agency. Currently Econo Foods has stores in Marquette and Iron Mountain that match our service areas. We are looking for your support in collection of as many receipts as possible. We are striving for a goal of total receipts equaling $1,000,000 over the next year. That would equate to a $10,000 donation for the agency.
